Baltimore Ravens still need help at Wide Receiver after Free Agency Additions

The Baltimore Ravens added two wide receivers via free agency but the position remains a major need.

Adding veterans Michael Crabtree and John Brown absolutely bolsters the Baltimore Ravens wide receiver corps. However, they don’t solve the problem at the position and come with their own question marks.

Crabtree has had a solid, but slightly disappointing NFL career. He entered the league with a lot of fanfare but has only topped the 1,000-yard mark twice in his career. It’s safe to say that he’s best suited to be a team’s No. 2 option.

Brown is a big-play threat with tremendous speed. However, he has struggled with injuries the past two years and is a wildcard at this point.

Baltimore’s holdovers at the position aren’t much to get excited about. Breshad Perriman has struggled with injuries and never developed into a consistent route runner. Chris Moore has some upside, but has yet to show he’s ready for a bigger role.

More from With the First Pick

This all means that the Ravens should still consider using a high 2018 NFL Draft pick on a wide receiver. It’s possible that someone like Alabama’s Calvin Ridley is on the board when they pick at No. 16 overall.

The 2nd round of the draft could have some interesting receiver prospects including D.J. Chark, Deon Cain, Courtland Sutton and Michael Gallup.

Chark is a burner who excels at creating plays down the field. He is an underrated route-runner who didn’t get much help from the quarterback play at LSU. This is someone who could dramatically outperform his draft range.

Cain also comes with a ton of speed. He has the quickness to outpace defensive backs and generate big plays. His route running ability is still developing but he has shown improvement each year.

Sutton is a big-bodied receiver capable to winning in contested situations. He is a gifted athlete who is only scratching the surface of his potential. His game needs some polish which is why he could be available in the 2nd round.

Gallup is one of my favorite prospects in the draft and flying under the radar. He has good size and easy speed. His run after the catch skills give him the ability to score every time he touches the football.

The Ravens may have made some solid free agent additions at wide receiver, but there’s plenty of big-time prospects available in this draft.
