2018 NFL Draft: D.J. Reed Scouting Report
By Jon Dove
Kansas State’s D.J. Reed is an underrated 2018 NFL Draft cornerback prospect.
D.J. Reed is currently flying under the radar when compared to the other 2018 NFL Draft cornerbacks. He’s a scrappy player who has proven himself to be a playmaker and someone capable of also contributing on special teams.
Reed features a smaller build and would be considered undersized when compared to most NFL cornerbacks. However, he works to overcome his smaller stature with his toughness and swagger. This is someone who has plenty of confidence in his ability.
Despite his lack of size, Reed shows the ability to hold up in man coverage. He has the speed to keep pace with quicker receivers and the change of direction to keep in phase.
His speed also allows him to limit big plays down the field. It’s rare to see a wide receiver behind Reed’s coverage.

When this does occur it’s because Reed will bite on double moves from time to time. However, that’s part of his game and why he has 7 career interceptions.
Reed has solid ball skills and will quickly get his head around to locate the football. He has shown the ability to make some acrobatic catches.
This is a cornerback who doesn’t hesitate to get involved in the run or screen game. Reed will attack the ball carrier looking to deliver a big hit.
His tackling could use some improvement as he doesn’t always wrap up. However, the effort is there for him to be a solid run defender.
Reed’s skills as a punt return may bring some added value. However, he can be a little reckless with the ball and make some poor decisions.
It’s possible that NFL coaches will want to go with a more reliable and safe punt returner.
Overall, Reed is a strong cover corner who can hold up in man coverage. His speed and fluidity help him limit separation. The fact he has strong ball production only helps his draft stock.
