Nick Foles‘ Super Bowl run was one of the more impressive stretches in recent memory, but it looks like he be back on the bench next year for the Philadelphia Eagles.

This offseason started with some speculation that the Philadelphia Eagles could potentially trade Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. Obviously, the reason behind this thinking is because the Eagles already have Carson Wentz locked in at quarterback.

In the past, situations like this would typically result in Foles being traded. Things are different in here based on Wentz injury, Foles contract and the quarterback market.

Wentz injured his knee at the end of the season which makes it a stretch to think he’ll be ready by the start of the season. The more likely scenario is that the Eagles ease Wentz back into action and allow Foles to begin the year as the starter.

Philadelphia will enter the year hoping to repeat as Super Bowl Champions and getting off the a strong start will be important to reaching that goal.

More from With the First Pick

Another major reason Foles is likely to remain with the Eagles is his favorable contract. According to Spotrac, Foles’ cap hit this year is $7.6 million which is a reasonable number for a backup quarterback.

This year’s quarterback market also factored into Foles’ current situation. There were more available quarterbacks than we are use to seeing. That group included veterans like Kirk Cousins, Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford and A.J. McCarron.

The 2018 NFL Draft also offers plenty of options with potential 1st round picks like Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield.

Most years we likely would’ve seen someone offer the Eagles a strong package to land Foles. In the past we have seen the Eagles alone trade Kevin Kolb, A.J. Feeley, Foles (to St. Louis) and Sam Bradford.

This situation isn’t ideal for Foles in that he doesn’t get a chance to build on his postseason run. However, the Eagles make out great because they have a proven backup quarterback on a reasonable contract.
