The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to select a quarterback at some point of the 2018 NFL Draft. A potential target at the position: Lamar Jackson.

When a report surfaces that a team met with a prospect, it tends to excite the masses. The unfortunate reality is that it’s par for the course as franchises attempt to put a face to a name and a personality to game film.

Following a Pro Day that included personnel from all 32 NFL teams, however, Lamar Jackson met with a potentially interested party: The Los Angeles Chargers.

Los Angeles is currently in possession of the No. 17 overall selection in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. There are other areas of need, but as 36-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers prepares for his 15th season, the organization is looking for an heir apparent.

According to Jonathan Jones and Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and the Chargers met with Jackson after his Pro Day.

This could just be a matter of due diligence, but it follows head coach Anthony Lynn praising Jackson at his Pro Day.

It could clearly be smoke with a harmless fire, but it’s worth noting that the Chargers are in the market for a quarterback.

Jackson may be the single most divisive figure in this draft class. His supporters are of the belief that he’s being overlooked for reasons beyond football, and his detractors have stated that he isn’t skilled enough to play quarterback.

Regardless of which side of the debate you fall on, what’s undeniable about Jackson is that he’s a dynamic talent who put together a legendary college career.

Jackson won the Heisman Trophy in 2016, and produced historic numbers during each of the past two seasons.

What works in Jackson’s favor is a combination of elite athleticism and explosive arm strength. The issues that he’s encountered are based on his inaccurate throwing on short and intermediate routes, as well as his somewhat slight frame for a running quarterback.

If the Chargers were to select Jackson in either the first or second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, however, he’d likely receive at least one year to develop behind Rivers.
