Vanderbilt’s Oren Burks is a solidly build 2018 NFL Draft linebacker prospect.

Oren Burks has turned in some solid performances during his tenure at Vanderbilt. He is someone who doesn’t shy away from contact and would represent a solid mid to late round 2018 NFL Draft selection. Burks has starting potential, but may need some time to round into form.

The first thing that jumps out with Burks is his solid frame, long arms and thick lower half. He uses these attributes to work near the line of scrimmage. Burks will work downhill and looks to meet blockers in the hole.

His balance and strength helps him hold at the point of attack and absorb contact. However, he needs to do a better job delivering an initial jolt. Burks tends to absorb too much of the contact rather than initiating the contact.

The fact that he is willing to take on blocks is a positive, but he also needs to do a better job working around blocks.

There are plenty of times where the quickest way to the ball carrier is by avoiding contact with the offensive line.

It’s important to note that Burks didn’t get much help from his defensive line. He often had to deal with a lot of traffic in his pursuit.

Burks shows solid skills in coverage and awareness. He does a good job locating the developing routes and using his burst to keep pace.

His overall athletic profile speaks to the fact that he has plenty of room to grow.

In fact, Burks put on a great performance at the combine and routinely ranked near the top among the linebacker group.

Overall, this is a solid prospect who needs some time to develop. Burks is someone who really shine when surrounded by better talent.

Someone might fall in love with his measurables and pull the trigger earlier than expected.  Prospects with his athletic profile tend to move up draft boards.
