There have been some major changes for the New York Giants this offseason including a new front office and coaching staff.

The New York Giants ushered in a new regime with Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmer in key roles. However, this group decided to keep things the same at the most important position by committing to Eli Manning.

New York’s decision to select Saquon Barkley at No. 2 overall means that Manning is likely to retain the starting quarterback job for the next several years.

Otherwise, Gettleman and company would’ve have been wise to grab a quarterback at the top of the 1st round. Their direction has been set and has the potential to spur a quick turnaround or set a possible rebuild back several years.

Looking at the win-now additions, New York worked to improve their offensive line and overall ground attack. Barkley is a special talent who should make life easier for Manning. The signing of Nate Solder should also have a major impact.

Solder will step in the left tackle spot and provide a major upgrade from Ereck Flowers. Rookie Will Hernandez is expect to be the start left guard replacing Justin Pugh.

The one area that wasn’t addressed was the center spot which became a need when Weston Richburg left via free agency. His loss and the question marks surrounding Flowers change to right tackle keeps the offensive line a question mark.

Defensively, the Giants added Alec Ogletree to the linebacking corps. He is a sideline to sideline playmaker who should have a big impact.

New York will be looking for major contributions from rookie Lorenzo Carter. The loss of Jason Pierre-Paul created a need for a pass rusher. Carter is expected to play a part in filling that lost production.

The decision to part ways with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie has created some uncertainty in the secondary. Janoris Jenkins is in place as one of the starting cornerbacks, but Eli Apple‘s struggles make the other spot an issue.

New York needs Apple to get his career on track and focus. His development will be one of the keys to the defense’s success.

Overall, the Giants offseason was one filled with some major risks. The decision to try and win now could prove to be a colossal mistake. They face an uphill battle to get into the playoffs this year and don’t have a great long-term base.
