The New York Jets had a balanced offseason where they made moves looking towards the long-term future as well as some that could be considered stopgaps.

This offseason for the New York Jets is all about the addition of Sam Darnold. They moved up the draft in order land what they hope to be their franchise quarterback. Darnold will be brought along slowly with veterans Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater also on the roster.

One major factor overlooked with this trade is the fact that the Jets didn’t need to include any future 1st round picks. This means that they haven’t completely mortgaged the future to land Darnold.

New York’s other big-time addition was cornerback Trumaine Johnson who received a big-money deal. He’s expected to be the leader of what should be a very solid secondary unit.

The Jets made some other solid moves this offseason that are basically roster fillers. Offensive linemen like Spencer Long and Travis Swanson will see action, but shouldn’t be considered long-term building blocks.

New York made similar moves at the running back position by bringing in Isaiah Crowell, Thomas Rawls and retaining Bilal Powell.

This is a roster that still has a lot of work. The wide receiver position is very thin especially when you factor in Robby Anderson‘s off-field concerns. Both tackle spots are areas of concern and will need to be addressed in the near future.

Defensively, the secondary and defensive line are in solid shape. The biggest issue is the pass rushing department. There’s a lot of pressure on Lorenzo Mauldin, Jordan Jenkins and David Bass to get after the quarterback.

This upcoming season is all about the development of Darnold. The lack of offensive weapons and question marks along the offensive line might push the Jets to keep him on the bench for most of the season.
