Mississippi State’s Montez Sweat is an exciting 2019 NFL Draft pass rushing prospect.

Montez Sweat has established himself as a solid passing rushing threat in the SEC. He has a chance to hear his name called early in the 2019 NFL Draft. Sweat uses his combination of length and quickness to generate pressure.

He features a long and lean frame with excellent arm length. The lack of bulk is a small concern because it creates durability questions and limits his overall power.

Sweat luckily has the frame to add a few more pounds and still retain his quickness. Adding more muscle and strength will be something most evaluators pin point as a focus for Sweat. However, this is a high-end prospect despite this concern.

His value is tied into his ability to generate pressure on the quarterback. Sweat features a quick first step and the balance needed to bend around the edge. He focuses on using his hands to keep clean which helps him employ his different pass rush moves.

Sweat’s change of direction skills play a role in his ability to counter inside. He also features the suddenness needed to work around blocks. Sweat is still developing as a player and adding more power moves to his arsenal should be on his to-do list.

Against the run, he gives strong effort and works to set the edge. His willingness to fight for inside hand placement is key to his run stopping skills.

Sweat’s lack of bulk really shows up in this area of his game. There are times where the more powerful blockers can move him off the line. He can also struggle disengaging once the blocker is able to get his hands on his frame.

Overall, this is a very high-upside prospect with the potential to be a double-digit sack guy at the next level. The key will be adding more weight and strength to his overall frame. Sweat may also be looking at a slight position change where he spends less time with his hand in the dirt.
