There is a high possibility every top-five pick in the NFL draft will be a defensive player. The Cardinals, 49ers, Jets, and Raiders are all solidified at quarterback, and the Buccaneers appear to be leaning toward sticking with Jameis Winston.
All of these teams need help on offense, but there really isn’t a top 10 worthy prospect at wide receiver, tight end or running back. That leaves us with offensive line or a defensive player. Most of these teams have several holes and will take the best players they can get their hands on in the NFL Draft.
The Cardinals finished dead last in the NFL in run defense and need an edge rusher to get into the backfield to stop the run and help Chandler Jones get to the quarterback. Joey Bosa is the likely pick here, but the Cardinals have a lot of holes on their roster and may look to trade out.
The 49ers are in the best shape of these five teams as Jimmy Garoppolo injury is the main reason for going 4-12. However, they need help in their front seven to reach the playoffs next season. They have invested heavily on defensive lineman in the past few years, but still need an effective pass rusher.
The Jets defense was one of the worst in the league especially at getting to the quarterback. However, they also struggled up front which is a big problem as they have a young quarterback in Sam Darnold to protect. The Jets will have to make a tough decision between a pass rusher or pass protector.
The Raiders defense was in shambles after trading Khalil Mack. The Raiders need help up front but also struggled in the secondary. Luckily they’ll have three first-round selections, but the number four pick will be their only one in the top 20.
Finally, the Buccaneers offense was among the NFL’s most, but the defense couldn’t stop anyone. The Buccaneers secondary has been a problem almost every year of their 11-year playoff drought; Tampa Bay needs a big-time corner and a draft full of them.
