The Patriots don’t need Rosen in 2019. And they probably won’t need him in 2020 or even 2021. But Tom Brady, despite evidence to the contrary, is human and he will eventually need to be replaced.

New England has two second-round picks (one acquired from the Bears in last year’s draft-day trade when Chicago moved up for WR Anthony Miller). If Bill Belichick can flip a second-rounder into Josh Rosen, who can then sit and learn behind Brady for a few seasons, he has to pull the trigger. He’s too smart not to.

At some point, the Patriots have to start planning for life after Brady. And while the Cardinals may value Murray more than Rosen, New England will offer the former UCLA standout a perfect opportunity to become a legitimate franchise quarterback down the road.
