6.

Brett Rypien QB

Boise State Broncos
Boise State Broncos /

Combine results

I’m a big fan of Rypien’s game and am pulling for him to land in a situation that will give him a chance to develop and grow as an NFL passer. He isn’t ready to play right now, but his tape is an exciting display of leadership and toughness in the pocket. He may never emerge as a big-time starter, but he’ll have a long and financially rewarding career as a respected backup who can win games when his number is called. I wouldn’t bet against this dude.

GRADE: 4th round

7.

Ryan Finley QB

North Carolina State Wolfpack
North Carolina State Wolfpack /

Combine results

Finley’s final grade will be all over the map this year; some teams will love him while others reject him altogether. He’s started a bunch of games and has attempted a bunch of throws, so teams that value experience — along with enough baseline arm talent to make a 53-man roster —  will give him a draftable Day-3 grade. He’s destined for backup duty even if his career begins as a practice squad player.

GRADE: 5th-6th round

8.

Jordan Ta'amu QB

Ole Miss Rebels
Ole Miss Rebels /

Combine results

Ta’amu is a plus athlete who’s had the good fortune of playing with some pretty dynamic skill players during his tenure at Ole Miss. His tape, however, doesn’t create much confidence in his ability to go through progressions at this point in his development. He’s accurate, he has plenty of arm strength to make all the throws, but he needs time to grow into an NFL player. He’ll get drafted and he should make a team, but his career trajectory will depend largely on whether he lands with a team that has a strong quarterback room.

GRADE: 6th round

9.

Gardner Minshew QB

Washington State Cougars
Washington State Cougars /

Combine results

Minshew took college football by storm in 2018 and his mustache alone makes him a draftable prospect. He’s not the most physically talented passer, but the dude loves football and he loves playing quarterback. Mike Leach’s quarterbacks don’t have the best track record of NFL success, but Minshew has the kind of mental make up to fight his way onto a roster. He’d be a great practice squad candidate.

GRADE: 7th round – PFA

10.

Tyree Jackson QB

Combine results

If you’re looking for a super-sized quarterback with elite athletic ability, then Jackson is your guy. He’s a better athlete than Josh Allen (Bills) and he’s probably the second-best runner at the position in this year’s class behind Kyler Murray. And while all that is great, the fact remains that he’s just so wildly inaccurate as a passer. It doesn’t matter how big, strong or fast you are if you can’t consistently hit your target. Jackson will probably get drafted on Day 2 and will be given time to develop with NFL coaching, but I’d proceed with caution before investing a high draft asset on him.
