Coach says Tua Tagovailoa ‘needs to humble himself’
By Bryan Perez
An anonymous coach recently suggested Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa was a big reason why the Crimson Tide lost the 2018 National Championship game.
Alabama starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is entering the 2019 college football season as a strong candidate to become the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and with such high expectations comes intense scrutiny and pressure.
That scrutiny is already beginning for him.
In Lindy’s Sports college football preview magazine, an anonymous coach called out the Crimson Tide quarterback as one of the main reasons Alabama lost last year’s National Championship game and suggested the junior passer needs to learn some humility.

“I think Tua needs to humble himself,” the coach said. “I think he did some bad things in the bowl game that cost the team because he put himself ahead of the team. He needs to understand Alabama won national championships by playing great defense and special teams and not beating itself. In the national championship game, the quarterback play was atrocious, and some would say the play-calling, too.”
There are a few things wrong with this whole thing, the obvious being the fact the coach spoke on the condition of anonymity. Criticism like this, one that takes a direct shot at Tagovailoa’s character, shouldn’t be made unless the accuser is willing to attach their name to it. Weak.
Additionally, there’s never been any indication that Tagovailoa is anything but a team-first player who comes from a great family background that instilled hard work and good moral character in him at an early age. He’s going to be a great leader in the NFL, as he’s already proven to be in the SEC.
Be careful not to read too deeply into anonymous reports, regardless of whether they’re from coaches, scouts or even teammates. They usually come from someone with an agenda, and in this case with Tua, it seems like there’s a coach trying to create a divide inside Alabama’s locker room.
