Isaiah Simmons’ dominant Week 1 performance confirms he’s nation’s top LB
By Chris Ross
After an outstanding Week 1 effort, it’s clear Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons is the best linebacker in the 2020 NFL Draft.
It took less than one game for Clemson to prove themselves as the best team in all of college football. After a dominant 52-14 win against Georgia Tech, the Tigers should be excited about the season ahead.
Despite a rough start from star QB Trevor Lawrence, Clemson was able to win due to a 200-yard, three-touchdown game from running back Travis Etienne, and a stellar effort from the defense. One defender, however, shined brighter than anyone else on the field. Linebacker Isaiah Simmons was dominant, and as we move forward, it’s clear he is the best linebacker eligible for the 2020 NFL Draft.
While Simmons was already expected to be among the top linebackers in college football this season, an unfortunate injury to Alabama LB Dylan Moses has allowed Simmons to grab the spotlight. It didn’t take long for him to shine, as his first-half performance in Week 1 impressed many, including CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso, who had this to say:
What separates Simmons from others is his ability to hold up against the run while seamlessly transitioning into pass coverage. Converting from safety this season, Simmons has plenty of experience in coverage, and it shows.
In the NFL, where tight ends and running backs are catching more passes than ever, it’s imperative that linebackers can hold up in coverage, making Simmons a perfect fit. It’s rare to find a prospect with the athleticism and versatility seen in Clemson’s star defender, with only a handful of NFL players possessing the same skills. In a league desperate for competent linebackers, expect Simmons to be a true star at the position for the next decade.
