Scouting Report

Coming in at seventh of these big seven names is Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts. While he is having a Heisman Trophy-worthy season, Hurts is clearly not on the same level of talent of that of Baker Mayfield or Kyler Murray were for the Sooners over the past two seasons. Over the past few weeks, more and more of Hurts’ game is being exposed, as head coach Lincoln Riley continues to do a great job of scheming around Hurts to mask his weaknesses.

More from With the First Pick

While it is not a new development, Hurts’ struggles with ball security have been exemplified over the past couple of weeks, including the Sooners’ comeback win over the undefeated Baylor Bears. Despite posting massive numbers in this primetime showdown, Hurts fumbled the ball three times and lost two of them; he threw an additional interception, turning the ball over a total of three times.

There is a solid chance that some team is going to take Hurts in the first round, but in the opinion of this writer, that would be a massive gamble as Riley has simplified the game down for Hurts quite a bit this season. Hurts’ progressions usually include one read, sometimes two, before Hurts tucks the ball and runs, a strength of his this season as he has run for nearly 1,000 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.

Ball placement and accuracy are not a strong point of Hurts’ game as well, so given his pre-snap dissection, in-play progression struggles, and accuracy issues, Hurts currently has a fifth round grade from this writer.
