Scouting Report

In today’s NFL, speed kills. This is why Isabella and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman both went in the second round in last year’s draft. As the league continues to put a higher premium on speed, we could see prospects such as Penn State’s speedster K.J. Hamler rise up draft boards.

More from With the First Pick

After tallying 42 catches for 754 yards and five touchdowns a year ago for the Nittany Lions, Hamler has already topped those numbers in 2019; he has recorded 791 yards receiving and eight touchdowns on 46 catches through ten games this season. With insane top end speed, Hamler has been a deep ball threat and short screen playmaker for Penn State this year.

While Hamler stands at just 5-9 and weighs in at only 176 pounds, he is a big play waiting to happen at any point in the ball game; the problem is that he does not have consistency under center at Penn State. Should he declare and test at the combine as well as it looks like he should, then Hamler could become a first round pick for a team lacking down-the-field ability.

Small, but mighty… or just extremely fast. Do not sleep on K.J. Hamler.
