Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Round 2. Pick 34. player. Neville Gallimore. DT. 815

The trade out of the first round with Washington last year is looking like a brilliant move. This is the second-round pick that the Colts received in that trade and it will end up being a very high pick in the second round. Now, what could the Colts look to address with this pick? There are plenty of good receivers on the board, but Chris Ballard has made it clear that he wants to be a team that wins in the trenches first. And outside of Denico Autry, the play in the middle of the defense at defensive tackle has left much to be desired.

Neville Gallimore is a big dude who is athletic for his size. He is a freakishly strong player who can anchor at the point of attack and eat up blocks. He has also shown he can use his athleticism and quick first step to penetrate gaps and make impact plays in the run game. While his skills seem to lend itself to be a solid interior pass rusher as well, that part of his game has yet to really translate to the field yet. Gallimore seems like the perfect complement to play next to the pass-rushing abilities of Autry.

Pick 54. S. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Round 2. Xavier McKinney. 829

Xavier McKinney is a player that is likely to just keep rising from this point and I would be surprised if he is actually available at this pick. If he is though, there is no way Ballard could pass on adding a talent like him to the secondary. Especially with Clayton Geathers being a free agent this season.

McKinney is a versatile player that fills multiple roles from his safety position. He has solid range as a deep safety, can play in the box as an extra player against the run, and is an effective blitzer from his safety position. Now, the Colts do still have good young players on the roster at safety in Malik Hooker and Khari Willis. But if you add McKinney to that group, you have one versatile safety group that can be used in a large variety of ways. In today’s pass-happy NFL, that can be the difference in a good defense and a great defense.
