Following his worst performance of the season against Kansas State where Oklahoma suffered their only loss, Hurts was tasked with bouncing back against a tough Iowa State squad in Ames to start their November. A close game that saw Hurts battle for a full four quarters was exciting to see for a team who has usually put the game away by the third quarter.
The next week was the most telling game for Jalen as he then had to take the Sooners into Waco against an undefeated Baylor Bears with everyone in the world watching this primetime showdown. For the first time, the moment looked too big for Jalen as he put himself and his team in a hole by way of a 28-point deficit.
Jalen bounced back on a big stage and willed his team to a victory in what was his defining moment as a prospect. Hurts showed that he had the mental toughness to get himself out of a slump which is big for a quarterback because there’s going to be some games where you just don’t have it. Hurts relied on his legs to get him back into the flow of the game which led to him finding trust again in his improved abilities as a passer that make him a legitimate quarterback class.
Jalen showed that there is a place for him in this strong quarterback class and he has every right to be in the conversation as a first rounder even if it isn’t in the top-15. He shouldn’t be evaluated like every other quarterback because he has his own unique skillset that can be built around. Jalen Hurts will land in a situation where a team will build an offense around his unique skillset and allow his warrior mentality as a winner to build a winning team and culture.
