2020 NFL Draft: Nobody is talking about Cam Akers
By Seth Steere
Weaknesses
As stated above Aker’s boasts great vision moving downhill and finding the hole in front of him, but when there is an opening to the outside he is either late to find it or unable to find it all. With his quick burst, you’d like to see him try to carry more plays to the outside and capture the sideline.
Akers is not the most natural pass catcher; he tends to bobble the ball before securing the catch. FSU doesn’t use him much as a receiver out of the backfield and when he does its generally on swing routes or anything to the flats.
Akers has the propensity to carry the ball low in his gut area as opposed to high and tight as you are taught. When he meets contact he doesn’t get “5 points of pressure” like most running backs are coached and because of it, he has a fumbling issue. In the four games I watched in 2019 (Boise St., Virginia, Clemson, and Florida) Akers had fumbled the ball twice.
Perhaps it is because of poor line play in front of him, but Akers will try to make too much happen at times behind the LOS. He will try to dance and make opponents miss instead of putting his foot in the dirt and just taking what the defense gives him, ultimately resulting in a loss of yards.
