The gist of the system

Some may argue that a lottery system similar to the NBA could be implemented, but this would never work in the NFL. With a larger roster, more players on the field at one time, and multiple positions to consider, leaving it up to chance whether a three win team picks before a team that just missed the playoffs would be brash. If the lottery system somehow had better teams picking earlier, the competitive gap would continue to grow.

More from With the First Pick

To increase competition in the NFL through the draft, I’m proposing that certain player groups are not allowed to be drafted in specific rounds. For example, in the first rounds if quarterbacks and defensive backs are not allowed to be selected, in the second round the teams that have not performed well are able to select more top talent at different positions, therefore, giving weaker teams a greater advantage at rebuilding a roster. Average fans will also be more engaged because more top talent will be going in later rounds.

However, setting the draft up this way presents other issues that I will address. Those include how the draft will be ordered, how trades will work in the draft, how contracts will be structured, and how regular season competition will change.
