Jake Fromm has declared for the 2020 NFL Draft, shocking many who expected him to return for his senior season at Georgia.

Jake Fromm has declared for the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Georgia quarterback revealed his decision on Wednesday in a post on Twitter.

In his announcement Fromm wrote:

"“This process has been unbelievably difficult, but through much prayer and counsel, I have decided that it is time for me to take on the next challenge in my life and pursue my lifelong dream of playing in the NFL.”"

Fromm’s decision is something of a surprising one, given he endured a difficult junior season in which he failed to take the leap many expected of him after an encouraging sophomore season.

He completed only 60.8 per cent of his passes, having completed 67.4 a year earlier, for 2,860 yards and 24 touchdowns with five interceptions. His yards per attempt fell from 9.0 to 7.4.

Having been leapfrogged by likely number one overall pick Joe Burrow, Fromm will be expected to be selected after Justin Herbert and Tua Tagovailoa despite the latter’s hip injury.

His task in the pre-draft season will be to separate himself from the next group of quarterbacks and ensure he is taken ahead of Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts and Jacob Eason.

There is an argument that Fromm would have been better off staying at Georgia for his senior year. Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields stand out as the top two quarterbacks in the 2021 class, and Fromm would have a clear path to being the third signal-caller off the board with a strong 2020 season.

However, Georgia’s receiving corps was largely unproductive in 2019 and left tackle Andrew Thomas has also declared for the NFL, with his likely replacement Cade Mays entering the transfer portal, according to Matt Zenitz of AL.com. Fromm would, therefore, not have a great deal to work with in his final season.

Going pro this year is a gamble that could backfire, but Fromm has the tools to succeed in the pros and if he lands with a team that can maximize his skill set, his decision will be vindicated.
