With the third pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions find themselves in a favorable position to come away as massive winners.

There is no team in a better position in the 2020 NFL Draft than the Detroit Lions, and the fans in the Motor City have to be screaming from the mountaintops… or from the top of their Fords. With the top two picks in the draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and the Washington Redskins already all but decided, the draft officially starts with the Lions.

The Lions find themselves in a great position to land an elite talent, or trade back and still land a tremendous prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft. With Joe Burrow and Chase Young most likely already penned in to their respective teams, the Lions could be open to finding a trade partner in the likes of a quarterback needy team.

With veteran quarterback Matt Stafford on the hook for over $20 million in dead money heading into the 2020 season, it feels unlikely that the Lions would move on from him this year and draft a young gunslinger with the third overall pick in the draft. The likely targets happen to be on the defensive side of the ball for Detroit.

More from With the First Pick

The Los Angeles Chargers sit with the sixth pick in the draft, the Miami Dolphins with the fifth, the Carolina Panthers with the seventh, and even the Tampa Bay Buccaneers all the way back at the 14th pick in the draft could be in the market for a new signal caller. All of these mentioned teams could scratch and claw in order to jump one another in the draft, putting the Lions in a position to sit back and receiver the rich revenue from a bidding war.

In an ideal world, their best offer would come from the Chargers, Dolphins, or Panthers, where they could receive an enormous draft haul and still manage to stay in the top-ten, and in the case of the Dolphins, even in the top-five. Should the Lions execute a trade down with one of these three teams, they could become rich beyond their wildest dreams in draft capitol, and also find themselves in position to still land an elite prospect like Ohio State’s Jeffrey Okudah, Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons, or Auburn’s Derrick Brown.

While the Detroit Lions find themselves in a favorable position, they must now do the hardest task of all, and have patience. There is no need to jump at the first, second, or third offer they receiver. In fact, they must plan for every scenario, and could even hold prospective teams hostage until they are on the clock in order to squeeze the best offer out of a team desperate to land either Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert.

Rub your hands together and give an evil laugh Lions fans, your team has the potential to fleece another team and still land a prospect of their dreams. The only question is: is their front office savvy and patient enough to pull off this heist this Spring?
