Dak Prescott and the Cowboys aren’t close to a contract extension and this 2020 NFL Draft quarterback class makes trading him and moving on a viable option
Over the past two offseasons, the Dallas Cowboys have had some high-profile contract disputes with some of their best players. First, there was the back and forth with defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, which actually began in 2018. With the 2020 NFL Draft right around the corner, the Cowboys must consider all of their options when discussing their biggest free agent this year: Dak Prescott.
After playing on the franchise tag, Lawrence proved his worth but the Cowboys were still reluctant to meet his demands. It got so bad that Lawrence’s agent actually told the edge rusher he needed to demand a trade. Lawrence didn’t want that and in the end, they came to terms on a deal.
As soon as that contract was signed, Dallas jumped into another dispute, this time with running back Ezekiel Elliott. This one got even worse as Zeke held out for the entire offseason and didn’t sign until days before the regular season began.
And when he did, Dallas was openly mocked for overpaying a running back, which is the most replaceable position in sports.

Now, they have another battle going on, but this time it’s with the least replaceable position — quarterback. The 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Dak Prescott, has been playing on a fourth-round pick’s rookie contract and has started every game for Dallas. He’s made the postseason twice and has even won a playoff game already — something his predecessor couldn’t do for years.
Still, Dallas is reluctant to pay him and that could be due to his awful play to start the 2018 season. He improved once Amari Cooper was added in a trade but the pre-Amari Dak has to give the Cowboys pause. Especially if the reports are true that he wants roughly $40 million which would mean he would have to make those around him better since that would eat up so much of their salary cap.
Now, there are more reports about the situation, even some saying Dak Prescott could hold out. If he does, would Dallas consider trading him and moving on? If they did, this could be a good season to add someone in the first round of the draft, and Prescott would surely net enough in a trade that they could possibly have their pick outside of Joe Burrow.
With that being said, here are the top three quarterbacks the Cowboys could consider if Prescott were to be traded away ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft.
