Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts quietly had one of the best college football seasons of the last decade. Had it not been for LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, Hurts may have ended up as the Heisman Trophy Winner. Hurts’ numbers spiked in 2019 after transferring to the University of Oklahoma from Alabama. Coming into 2019, his senior season, Hurts hoped to be the third consecutive Oklahoma quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy and be selected first overall in the NFL Draft.
Jalen Hurts was absolutely sensational to begin the 2019 season. Hurts was unstoppable and Oklahoma went 7-0 to start the season. The fewest amount of points the offense scored was in a 34-27 win over the 11th ranked Texas Longhorns.The only game in which Hurts did not score at least four touchdowns was a 70-14 win over South Dakota , a game in which he left very early. Throughout the rest of the 2019 season, Hurts’ flaws were exposed, specifically in the LSU and both Baylor games.
Hurts lacks some of the more important parts of being an NFL quarterback. Accuracy and the finer points of the game have not come to him yet. Throughout his college career, at Alabama and Oklahoma, Hurts was not seen as a future NFL quarterback. His lack of passing ability was a great limiter until he arrived on campus in Norman, Oklahoma.

In 2019, Hurts made great strides as a passer under offensive mastermind Lincoln Riley. Hurts had big shoes to fill. The last two quarterbacks to transfer to Oklahoma ended up being Heisman Trophy winners, Big Twelve conference champions, number one overall draft picks, and led their respective squads to the college football playoff. He transferred to Oklahoma with hopes that a year under Riley would turn him into a legitimate NFL prospect, and for the most part it did.
Hurts’ draft stock skyrocketed in his lone year under Lincoln Riley. He showed great improvement as a passer and further proved what his strengths were. Hurts showcased his athleticism all through the 2019 season, proving what a weapon his legs are. What Hurts is often commended for his leadership and being a winner. For the fourth consecutive year, Hurts helped his team secure a berth in the college football playoff.
