Browns: WTFP 2020 NFL Draft 3-round staff mock picks and explanations
By Sam Penix
The Browns explored trade options here, but are more than content to stay put and select Winfield. Karl Joseph and Andrew Sendejo aren’t a terrible safety duo, but they are both on one-year deals, Sendejo will be 33 in September (and is the oldest player on the team), and Joseph has developed a reputation for being injury-prone.
Even if Cleveland did have a long-term safety tandem, a team can never have too many good defensive backs, and that’s exactly what Winfield is. His tackling is not the best, as he misses more than you’d like, but his instincts, range, and ball skills are all excellent. He can play single-high, in the slot, or in the box. He finished 2019 with seven interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. Winfield’s feel for the game is special, and it’s obvious he is the son of an all-time great.
The name recognition is a plus for fans, but Winfield doesn’t need his last name to be a great prospect in his own right. As long as he can stay healthy (he took medical redshirts in both 2017 and 2018 due to hamstring and foot injuries), he will be roaming the field in Cleveland for a long time.
