Los Angeles Chargers team preview before 2020 NFL Draft
Team Needs
Quarterback
The Los Angeles Chargers and the 16-year quarterback Phillip Rivers mutually agreed to part ways this offseason. The Chargers are slated to start Tyrod Taylor Week1, but Taylor’s contract is up at the end of the season. The Chargers are not in rebuild mode, they have an elite defense on paper. They are a win-now football team that needs a quarterback. Getting Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert and having him sit behind Taylor for a year would be perfect and have Taylor walk in free agency next season.
Left Tackle
The Los Angeles Chargers decided to sign a longtime right tackle for the Green Bay Packers, Bryan Bulaga. But that left tackle spot remains to be a question mark year in and year out. The projected started for the Chargers is former third-round pick, Trey Pipkins. Drafting a left tackle in the early rounds would allow Pipkins to have some competition for the position.
Linebacker
The Chargers found a pot gold with rookie Drue Tranquill, but as a linebacker group, there are a lot questions. Thomas Davis was released by the Chargers, Denzel Perryman can be the starter for this season but his contract is up next season, and there are some serious injury concerns with Kyzir White. If the Chargers can get a linebacker in the early rounds, they could have one of the best defenses in the NFL.
