2020 NFL Draft: 49ers trade pick to Buccaneers who take Tristan Wirfs
The 49ers traded the No. 13 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to the Buccaneers who take Tristan Wirfs
The San Francisco 49ers traded an All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to net the No. 13 overall pick. They then traded that pick to the Buccaneers who then took Tristan Wirfs, offensive tackle out of Iowa.
Despite their run to the Super Bowl last season, the 49ers entered the 2020 draft with holes on both sides off the ball. This added draft capital may help.
The Buccaneers decided that strengthening the offensive line to protect Tom Brady was the best use of a top-15 pick and settled on Tristan Wirfs as the top player on the board among that position group.

Given his draft status, the caliber of player the Buccaneers gave up for the pick and Tampa Bay’s desire to make an immediate return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2002, Wirfs will be under significant pressure to perform right off the bat.
The Bucs selecting him at this spot is a particularly huge show of faith in Wirfs as general manager Jason Licht has no choice but to protect their prized jewel in Brady.
San Francisco trading this selection will increase their urgency to take a player with the 31st pick in the draft. The 49ers are not scheduled to pick again until the fifth round after their second first-rounder.
Byron Leftwich can at least afford to start thinking about how he will deploy Wirfs in his offense. If Wirfs makes a seamless transition to the pros, then it won’t take long for Bucs’ fans to forget about the long years of postseason drought.
