In a draft that might make or break Giants general manager David Gettleman, New York has made their 2020 NFL Draft first round selection in Andrew Thomas.

Rumors heighten the tension surrounding the Giants’ 2020 NFL Draft selection, but Gettleman has made his decision in Georgia’s offensive tackle Andrew Thomas.

New York under former Panthers general manager David Gettleman has historically focused on the defensive side of the ball, given the piecemeal defense Gettleman inherited. Gettleman attempted to fix that with ten out of the sixteen selections on the defensive side of the ball with seven of those belonging to the front-seven. His focus on the trenches on defense has had mixed reviews so far, with a 4-12 record along with the 30th ranked ascoring defense in 2019.

The selections of running back Saquon Barkley in 2018 and franchise quarterback Daniel Jones in 2019 has created a strong foundation to build upon along with Dexter Lawrence, Will Hernandez and B.J. Hilll. With nine more selections to go, he has a lot of decisions left.

Those nine selections include: picks 36, 99, 110, 150, 183, 218, 238, 247, and 255. Knowing Gettleman, he will likely expend some of those seventh round selections to move up later in the draft, perhaps in the fifth round if he likes a prospect particularly. If the Giants can cross out their needs at offensive tackle, pass rusher, linebacker and grab another skill player, they should be well on their way to a productive rebuild.

If not, it will be a long 2020 for general manager Dave Gettleman, one that will likely end in his firing should New York not produce promising results. Andrew Thomas will only help to keep Daniel Jones on his feet and keep Gettleman in a job.
