Round 2, Pick 45 – Jaylon Johnson, CB, Utah

TRADE – The 49ers send picks No. 31 and 176 and a 2021 fifth-rounder to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for picks 45, 76 and 117.

The 49ers predictably get out of pick 31 and, in a trade with Tampa Bay, ensure they have selections in rounds two, three, and four.

Johnson is a player that has drawn admiration from the 49ers, according to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, and it is not difficult to see why.

At 6’0″ and 193 pounds, he has the prototypical frame for the boundary corner position and demonstrated impressive ball skills during his time with the Utes.

Indeed, Johnson followed a 2018 campaign in which he had four interceptions and four passes defended with a 2019 season that saw him record only two picks but 11 pass breakups.

The 49ers are in a position where they do not have to ask Johnson to start right away, with Richard Sherman still in his prime and undrafted free agent Emmanuel Moseley emerging as a starter.

However, what the 49ers lack at corner is depth. Former third-round pick Ahkello Witherspoon has battled injuries and poor performances and Johnson would offer further competition for the spot Moseley made his won in the postseason. Sherman is entering the last year of his contract and an in-house insurance policy is needed in case he is not re-signed in 2021. At this point in the draft, the 49ers could hardly ask for a better potential replacement than Johnson.
