2020 NFL Draft: Michael Turk gets waiver to return after going undrafted
By Cory Kinnan
Michael Turk went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, but is now back at ASU
As the landscape of college football continues to change, another landmark decision has been made. After competing at the NFL Scouting Combine and going through all of the pre-draft ringer, Arizona State punter Michael Turk still did not hear his name called in the 2020 NFL Draft.
After going undrafted, however, Turk will not go to the NFL and look to sign as a free agent as most would. Instead, he has received a waiver from the NCAA to return to college ball as he will compete for the Sun Devils again in 2020.
While NCAA basketball has allowed undrafted underclassmen to return to school, it has not happened with football players who have gone undrafted in the NFL Draft. While the position he plays is not exciting, the landmark that may have been set through Turk’s hearing will have lasting effects on the sport.

Special teamers are not often drafted, but it seems as though Turk may not have even gotten a call from an NFL team for him to make such a decision to return to school. Either that, or Turk wants a second chance at getting drafted again in 2021 in order to earn some guaranteed money through his performance next year.
"“I left college early to pursue a professional career and that didn’t work out, however… I’ve been working hard and praying about it and now, due to COVID-19 and extenuating circumstances, I’ve actually been granted my two years of eligibility back to play college football and I will be going back to Arizona State University” (via Twitter)"
Only entering his redshirt junior season with the Sun Devils, Turk has two more years to potentially stay in school and improve his game. In his first season as the starter at Arizona State, Turk punted the ball 67 times, averaging 46 yards per boot.
Not only did Turk decide to declare for the 2020 NFL Draft as a redshirt sophomore, then go undrafted, but he also becomes the first player to get a do-over. From here on out, it will be interesting to see how the NCAA handles undrafted underclassmen.
