The Browns are looking to pay Myles Garrett hansomely

Still with two years left on his rookie contract, former first overall pick in 2017 Myles Garrett is discussing a new deal with the Cleveland Browns. This new deal would look to make the star pass rusher in Cleveland the highest paid defensive player in the NFL, topping Khalil Mack’s
$23.5 million annual salary.

And Garrett is worth every last penny of this potential megadeal.

At just 24 years old, Garrett has already established himself as one of the premier pass rushers in the NFL. Through just 37 career games as a professional, Garrett has already tallied 30.5 sacks, racking them up at a rate only seen by J.J. Watt and Reggie White.

Firmly in the running for NFL Defensive Player of the Year before his on-field incident at the end of a Thursday Night matchup with their rival, Garrett was on a torrid pace. Though he played only ten games in 2019 after receiving an indefinite suspension after wielding Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph’s helmet against him, he racked up ten sacks.

From his first professional snap, which resulted in his first career sack, through his sophomore season where he recorded 13.5 sacks in 16 games, to last year’s nightmare ending to a fast and furious start, Garrett is a force to be reckoned with on the field. He has graded out near the top of the league in his position by multiple metrics, including that of Pro Football Focus.

Now entering his fourth season, Garrett had his fifth-year option picked up by the Browns, a relative no-brainer. Former NFL and Browns’ general manager Joe Banner, however, has questions as to why Garrett and his representation would consider a deal this early.

As the salary cap is on the rise, it may make more sense for the player, Garrett, to wait until next summer or even the summer after that to truly maximize his potential earnings. This would allow for him to let older pass rushers such as Joey Bosa and Yannick Ngakoue to set the new market for him to build his new deal off of.

While Garrett could potentially wait a year or two to sign a new deal, it looks promising between both sides that a new deal worth around $25 million annually could get done. Elite pass rushers are hard to come by in the NFL, let alone young ones; the Browns are wise to attempt to get this megadeal done, as well as others, well before Garrett’s contract is set to expire.
