Kevin Thomson looks to elevate his draft stock with transfer to Washington

After years of watching Jake Browning and a season with Jacob Eason under center, the Washington Huskies have landed a new quarterback. After three seasons with the Sacramento State Hornets, quarterback Kevin Thomson is making his way to the Pac-12 after entering the transfer portal earlier this month.

As injuries have been his main concern, Thomson played his first full season of his collegiate career in 2019 (well, he missed one game), where he led the Hornets to a record of 8-5. During his junior campaign, Thomson threw for over 3,200 yards and 27 touchdowns; he threw just eight interceptions while completing over 58 percent of his passes.

A dual-threat weapon, Thomson also rushed for over 600 yards and 12 touchdowns a year ago as well. Entering his senior season, the Sacramento State transfer will have to compete with the young quarterbacks in Jacob Sirmon and Dylan Morris.

In a deep quarterback class, a shift to not only FBS play, but into a power-five conference as well has a chance to boost the draft stock of Thomson. Surrounded by the best weapons he has ever had, the young Huskies will need their quarterback to carry them to another winning season in 2020.

While it is highly unlikely for Thomson to enter the ranks of the consensus top pick at this point Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, or Trey Lance, he could look to enter the conversation as one of the sleepers in the 2021 quarterback class. This class of sleepers includes Louisville’s Micale Cunningham, Desmond Ridder, among others.

The key to a successful 2020 season for Thomson will depend on his healthy. He is absolutely lethal when he is on the field, throwing for 52 touchdowns and 12 interceptions over his career, and rushing for over 1,200 yards and 21 touchdowns. Can the Huskies ride Thomson to success in the Pac-12 this season?
