The Jets may have to rely heavily on rookie safety Ashtyn Davis

The New York Jets seem to be in a stand off with their All-Pro safety Jamal Adams, as he has named a list of desired destinations along with a request for a trade. As the Jets look to ship out a starting safety, it is a good thing they drafted another in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft in California’s Ashtyn Davis.

A former track star and walk-on player with the Golden Bears, Davis went on to receive an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl. He could not, however, participate in the event due to an injury. The injury also held Davis out of the NFL Scouting Combine, an event he would have wowed at, causing him to fall into late day-two of the draft.

Used as a free safety at Cal, Davis may have to move outside of his comfort zone should the Jets move on from Adams. While Davis can get downhill in a hurry, given his track speed, he does not have much experience playing in the box at the collegiate level.

Pro Football Network’s A.J. Schulte ranked Davis as his number two

"“There’s really nothing Davis cannot do at a high level. He’s a phenomenal athlete and great coverage safety. His background at corner shows up in his strong ability in man coverage, which is vastly important for a safety. His ball skills are top-notch, and his instincts make him a high-impact playmaker” (Schulte via PFN)."

However, given the Jets already have Marcus Maye on their roster, their starting safety over the top, Davis will have to get accustomed to pulling out his traits as a strong safety. Davis is an excellent open field tackler who plays full speed ahead, so this adjustment may not be as steep as he transitions to the professional level.

Ashtyn Davis has the athletic ability to compete at the next level, and has the wits to succeed in coverage. However, can he translate his ability of coming downhill from his free safety spot in college to stacking the box with the Jets in the NFL?
