2021 NFL Draft: 3 fits for Gregory Rousseau after opting out
By Surae Poole
First Okudah, then Rousseau? The Lions would be thrilled
The Detroit Lions finished 2019 with three wins. To make matters worse, they were tied for 29th in the NFL with 28 total sacks. Cornerback Darius Slay was traded away to the Philadelphia Eagles and replacing him will be Jeff Okudah. The NFC North features outstanding pass rushers. Detroit is the only team missing the great talent out on the edge.
Trey Flowers is certainly a good football player but in no way shape or form will he be considered an outstanding pass rusher. Matt Patricia was a defensive mastermind as the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. Not so much for the Detroit Lions.
Obviously, the talent on the two rosters is different but the Lions certainly had some pieces on that defense to work with. Patricia is hanging on by a thread right now. If this team doesn’t start winning or if the defense doesn’t improve, the front office has some decisions to make. We’ll assume for now that Patricia will be here to make this selection.
Gregory Rousseau is a high impact player from day one on the opposite side of Trey Flowers. Patricia would be able to do more upfront from a scheme perspective with Rousseau’s versatility. If Detroit is in the position to take him in round one they should jump at the opportunity.
