Neville Gallimore has been given a golden opportunity with the Cowboys

There is nothing that a football fan, coach, or player hates more than injuries. Unfortunately, they are just as much as part of the game as touchdowns. Teams have had seasons derailed by injuries. Players have had their careers ruined by them. Earlier this week, the Dallas Cowboys took a punch to the gut. Gerald McCoy, one of the best players of the last decade, went down for the season with a quad injury, but they do have depth at the position, selecting Neville Gallimore in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Evidently, the Cowboys were prepared for this. There is a clause in the contract that allows Dallas to move on from McCoy and save about $6 Million. The NFL is a cutthroat business, and knowing that he will not be able to use the state of the art team facilities to rehab is disheartening, as McCoy is one of the most beloved players in the NFL.

However, there is a silver lining in the McCoy news. Rookie defensive tackle Gallimore will be getting an opportunity that would not have been possible without the injury. With the veteran out for the year and off the team, the former Oklahoma Sooner has an opportunity to really compete for a starting job in training camp.

Dallas was able to steal Gallimore in the third round as part of their very impressive draft class. He was even getting some first round buzz during the draft process. The Cowboys have a loaded defensive line room, especially on the interior for him to compete with.

Even without McCoy, Gallimore will be competing with Trysten Hill, Dontari Poe, Antwaun Woods, and the versatile Tyrone Crawford. Being a rookie, Gallimore has upside, which would encourage coaches to give him more reps in practice as well as in games.

Gallimore is a really good pass rusher from the interior. He plays effectively with his hands and is an absolute force from the defensive tackle spot. If he gets first-team reps in practice, he will get to match up with the best of the best in practice.
