JP Urquidez, OT, Texas State

As you would expect when talking about a 3-9 team from 2019, there isn’t a whole lot of NFL talent on the roster for Texas State. There is one guy who has a shot to catch the eyes of NFL scouts this fall, however. His name is JP Urquidez. He is a former four-star recruit who committed to the University of Texas after high school. Urquidez transferred to Texas State earlier this spring as a graduate transfer for his final year of eligibility.

There is not a lot known about Urquidez right now. He played very sparingly for the Longhorns during his time in Austin. He only played in two games his first three years before becoming a mainstay on special teams in 2019 as a redshirt Junior. As you would expect, his playing time at his natural position along the offensive line has been virtually non-existent up to this point.

So how does a guy that has barely played in college have even a possibility of making an NFL camp in the future? For starters, Urquidez possesses an NFL-type frame at 6-foot-6 and 300 pounds. From his time in high school and during his limited playing time at Texas, he has shown solid movement skills for a guy that size.

If you’re an offensive lineman with size and can move with some effectiveness, you’re going to at least catch the eye of scouts. That being said, Urquidez will have to take full advantage of his chance at Texas State to reach that potential. He will have to play at a very high level as a starting tackle for the Bobcats to gain and retain the attention of NFL scouts ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft.
