The battle for QB4 heats up as the 2021 NFL Draft inches closer

The 2020 class of quarterbacks are already making an impact at the NFL level, with Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert leading the way in the battle for the Offensive Rookie of the Year. However, with the 2021 NFL Draft nearing closer by the day, there is another battle brewing, and it is that for the right to be named QB4.

The top-three quarterbacks in this year’s draft class, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance sit at the top, however after them the door is wide open. As the college football season has gotten underway, with the Big Ten and the Pac-12 set to return to play in the coming weeks, a handful of quarterbacks have staked their claim.

Here we will explore five quarterbacks who have a shot at being the fourth quarterback off the board as the 2020 season rolls along. Who knows? One may even burst onto the scene as Joe Burrow did a year ago and rise even higher.

Honorable Mention: Jamie Newman, Wake Forest

Entering the season, Wake Forest-to-Georgia transfer quarterback Jamie Newman was set to see a rise in his draft stock. His arm talent is evident, he possesses good accuracy down the field and towards the boundary, but where he lacks is his ability to process the field in a timely manner as well as pre-snap. His year then took a weird turn after former USC quarterback JT Daniels transferred to Athens, then Newman decided to opt out of the season.

With no more games to see his 2021 NFL Draft stock take a rise, it seems highly unlikely Newman will be the fourth quarterback off the board. However as his arm talent is evident, and with the Reese’s Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine still to go, Newman will have to make the most of his now limited opportunities.
