Grass is not greener for one former Clemson Football quarterback

Chase Brice, the former backup to the Clemson Football Team, is on the move yet again after an unspectacular, single season stint with the Duke Blue Devils. Where will he land?

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. The former backup for the Clemson Tigers, Chase Brice, is headed to his third school in as many years after most recently playing at Duke University. Learning and operating under Dave Cutcliffe, the noted quarterback guru behind the Manning brothers and Giants QB Daniel Jones, Brice played underwhelming football with a mere 10 touchdowns to go against a startling 15 interceptions. It is a surprising development considering his coach, and the tools he came to Duke with.

Per Greenville News, the decision was purely an issue with fit:

"“Never a mistake to come to Duke,” Brice said Monday night in a text message to reporter Steve Wiseman of the Raleigh News and Observer. “I know it wasn’t what everyone envisioned as far as the outcome of our record but I learned a good bit about myself during my time at Duke. I just felt that I needed to move on and find a better fit for me.”"

It is interesting that his reasoning is the “fit” despite working with a noted savant of the quarterback position. Overall, this poor season can’t be placed only on Brice’s shoulders. The Blue Devils finished with an uninspiring 2-9 overall record after ending their season in a blowout loss to a weak Florida State team. They lost every single ACC game they played. And yet it started so promising for the junior.

Brice had plenty of potential as he waited in the wings behind Lawrence. Standing at 6-3 and 235 pounds, he has the frame, the arm, and boasts some athleticism that reeks of potential to be a quality starter. He flashed with a beautiful performance in place of Lawrence versus Syracuse in 2018. But Duke didn’t possess the talent surrounding him, nor the scheme apparently, to complement his ability.

Where to next for former Clemson Football QB?

The question now is where will he land? There are a host of quality programs that will lose starters to the 2021 NFL Draft and many will be outside the ACC where he spent the last few years. Florida will lose Kyle Trask and has no clear answer to replace him. Alabama could consider him once Mac Jones leaves, and Ohio State only has a handful of inexperienced signal callers once Justin Fields leaves. Chase Brice will benefit from the extra eligibility year granted by the NCAA due to COVID-19’s impact

It’ll be interesting to see if Brice can land in a big program, or will have to seek refuge in a smaller one that is willing to accept him despite his poor season. Hopefully he can play well enough next year to throw his name into the ring of 2022 NFL Draft prospects.
