Texans give up Penei Sewell and more for Laremy Tunsil
By Cory Kinnan
The Texans look like big losers in their trade for Laremy Tunsil
Less than two years ago, the Miami Dolphins shocked the nation by trading one of the best young offensive tackles in the NFL to the Houston Texans. Included in the package were Houston’s next two first round picks, and a 2021 second round pick with two bottom-of-the-roster players.
With the first pick, the Dolphins landed Auburn cornerback Noah Igbinoghene at the end of the 2020 first round after trading back with the Green Bay Packers. The Texans, however, have since parted ways with former head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien, who has bled all of their draft assets dry.
There is no doubting the asset that Tunsil is, as he is one of the top young offensive tackles in the league, that price is a steep one to pay for a non-quarterback. What makes it even worse is that the trade for Tunsil did not move the needle long-term.

Texans or Dolphins: who won the trade?
Now, as Houston sits with a record of 4-11, they would hold the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Instead that pick goes to the Dolphins as they continue to reap the rewards of the Tunsil trade. Who is the presumed target at that pick?
Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell.
While this is apples-to-oranges, as O’Brien made the deal in a win-now mode, it now appears the Texans, set further back, could have landed Sewell for a much cheaper cost. The Dolphins will now get the opportunity to pair Sewell with 2020 first rounder Austin Jackson.
Two first round picks and a second round pick for Laremy Tunsil? Or just one first rounder for perhaps the best offensive tackle prospect in quite some time? The answer seems like a relatively easy one.
