Day 3 Picks

Round 4, Pick 113: Jabril Cox, LB LSU

Day three of this Miami Dolphins mock draft kicks off with another linebacker. We took one on the first day, and we’re going back to the well to start off the last day of the draft. This time we’re going a bit more traditional with LSU linebacker Jabril Cox. Where Notre Dame’s Owusu-Koramoah is more of a tweener, Cox is a linebacker through and through.

Cox came to the Tigers from North Dakota State, and it was a good move for him. He’s improved his draft stock this year, despite playing on a bad LSU team. He’s got all the tools to be a good linebacker at the next level. He just needs to put it all together and do it consistently.

He also needs to get better at trusting his instincts and reacting to what he’s seeing, rather than waiting to actually see it before firing. He’s got a lot of potential, but there’s still a good amount of work left there.

What I would have done: This was another bad spot for the Dolphins. There’s not a whole lot on the board right now at positions of need for the Dolphins. I don’t love the idea of taking another linebacker with the Owusu-Koramoah pick earlier in this mock draft. This isn’t a bad pick, but I probably would have opted for someone like Texas safety Caden Sterns here. Miami missed the influence of Reshad Jones greatly last season. While Sterns isn’t the same type of safety, he could fill some of the same shoes.

Round 6, Picks 185 & 186: Lorenzo Neal, DT Purdue & Cade Otton, TE Washington

We end our Miami Dolphins mock draft with back-to-back picks. So far, we’ve spent three picks on the offense, and three on the defense. All of those offensive selections have been along the line. Now, we add someone to the defensive line with Purdue defensive tackle Lorenzo Neal. No one should expect Neal to come in and put up a season like Raekwon Davis did for the Dolphins this year. But if he can develop into a solid contributor like a Zach Sieler, that’s about as much as you can ask for from a day 3 pick.

Zack Patraw of The Dynasty Draft Room breaks down the game of Neal:

"“There’s quite a bit of athleticism to Neal’s game. I like the way he uses his hands to win reps. He’s got some good quickness to his game for someone that is well in the 300-pound range. He’s able to get low and lift up linemen to destroy their anchor. He has some springiness to his game and even a little agility for someone of his size. He does well to read what the line is doing and shooting gaps, especially in zone runs. He stacks and sheds really well with the strength that he has.”"

To round things out, we get Cade Otton from Washington. Miami’s offense still needs a lot of work, and it needs explosive playmakers. What it doesn’t need is another tight end. Mike Gesicki is the playmaker of the group, and Miami got nice contributions from the others on the depth chart this year. But, we’re strictly adhering to the BPA approach, so this is what we’re left with. On day 3 of the draft, you really can’t complain too much here.

What I would have done: Between Mike Gesicki, Durham Smythe, and Adam Shaheen, the Dolphins don’t need another tight end. They absolutely need more play-makers, but tight end isn’t the way to go about that. Especially not this late in the draft. Miami hasn’t picked up a receiver yet, and there’s no one left at the position worth the pick. However, another position they need help at is running back. Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed produced last season, but an upgrade is needed. Jaret Patterson is still on the board here, and I would have taken him with one of these two picks.
