It appears the Jets may keep Sam Darnold after all

It has been a whirlwind of news coming out of the Big Apple as the New York Jets are making waves. They now have their new head coach in the form of the former energetic defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers in Robert Saleh. Now after the hire, there are discussions regarding their quarterback situation.

With the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, many assumed it was a lock that the Jets would go for one of Ohio State’s Justin Fields, BYU’s Zach Wilson, or North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. However, that may not be the case after all as the Gang Green transitions into a new era in their franchise history.

On ESPN, Adam Schefter reported that he “would be surprised if Sam Darnold is not the quarterback on opening day.” Needless to say, if the general manager Joe Douglas and his team opt away from the quarterback position, the fallout from the rest of the teams and in the draft would be rather significant.

Fallout if Jets keep Sam Darnold

Pure mayhem is in order should Schefter’s beliefs come to life. Not only would the Jets then be in position to land an absolute haul in a trade down with a quarterback-needy team if they keep Darnold, but teams like the Atlanta Falcons, potentially Philadelphia Eagles, and Carolina Panthers would rejoice.

Would the Miami Dolphins then look to take the likes of Fields is the reports of their uncertainty with Tua Tagovailoa are true? The San Francisco 49ers could be a player in a trade up for one of the remaining three quarterbacks as their time with Jimmy Garoppolo seem to be coming to an end, and with their championship window open.

Needless to say, the Jets will have their options on the table should they opt not to take a quarterback with the second overall pick. Would they trade back, would they take Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell or cornerback Patrick Surtain II? This is just the beginning of the madness in the Big Apple.
