Comparing Rashawn Slater to the 2020 class

The word most commonly thrown around when discussing Sewell is generational, but is he truly the best prospect within the past decade? Now, I was not scouting until the 2018 season, but are we positive he is that much better than the historic class we say last year in the 2020 draft? I’m not so convinced.

For the 2020 class my rankings were:

  1. Jedrick Wills – 4th overall on big board (top 10 grade)
  2. Tristan Wirfs – 11th overall on big board (early first round grade)
  3. Andrew Thomas – 17th overall on big board (late first round grade)
  4. Mekhi Becton – 24th overall on big board (early second round grade)

If you look to compare Slater and Sewell to last years class it would stack something like this for me:

  1. Wills
  2. Slater
  3. Sewell
  4. Wirfs
  5. Thomas
  6. Becton

Now, for many Sewell and/or Slater would be at that top spot. There is nothing wrong with that but, is he really that much better than Wills or your top offensive tackle prospect from the 2020 class? To me he is not head and shoulders above, making it extremely hard for either to be viewed as a generational prospect.

There is obviously still a lot left before grades are finalized but with the film evaluations done for both players, neither should have their grades shift much, if at all.
