Round 4, Pick 120: Cameron Sample, DL, Tulane

Coming into the 2021 draft the Seattle Seahawks only have a pick in rounds two, four, five and seven. As a team that is looking to compete now, a seventh round pick is an expendable pick even with the limited amount of picks in the cupboard. In this mock the Seahawks trade picks 128, 168, 229 and a 2022 fifth for picks 119 and 125 in the 2021 draft. Adding talent that can contribute to the season directly in front of us will be the main focus.

With the 119th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks selected the 6-foot-3 and 280 pound edge rusher out of Tulane in Cameron Sample. Sample was a four year player for the Green Wave who never was quite elite but was steadily productive the final three years of his career. In four seasons at Tulane, Sample totaled 162 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, seven pass deflections, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble as well. The numbers aren’t eye popping especially for the level of play but consistency is the key with Sample.

Sample is another hybrid type of defender who has experience across the defensive line and as a linebacker. Sample doesn’t have the ideal bend you look for in a pass rusher but he is solid enough with his technique to get to the QB from time to time. Depending on the play and defensive package you can rely on Sample to slide inside and squeeze between the gaps to get into the backfield. You can also ask him to stand up on the outside and have him rush from the linebacker position.

Sample likely won’t be a day one starter but as the season progresses one could expect him to earn more and more snaps. Sample is an experienced player with position versatility and those guys tend to find success at the NFL level.
