Chargers: 3 Trai Turner replacements in 2021 NFL Draft
By Surae Poole
3. Alex Leatherwood, Alabama
Alex Leatherwood could bring much-needed versatility to the Chargers group upfront. He has experience playing left tackle and right guard for Alabama. Leatherwood has a nice frame. As a run blocker, he showed the ability to move guys off the ball when he gets his hands on them. He plays with an aggressive mindset and he enjoys mauling people in the run game. He showed solid pass sets but he can get in trouble at times with fast and flexible pass rushers.
He lacks quick lower body movement skills and it hurts him on occasion. This is the main reason he’s best suited to play guard in the NFL. With a prospect like Leatherwood, who has shown that he can play tackle or guard in the SEC, it wouldn’t hurt for the Chargers to play him at both positions to see where he best fits.
He also brings a high IQ to the game as he often called out different protections or defensive fronts. Leatherwood comes from a great program with great coaching. He can reach his ceiling at right guard rather than tackle and with the Chargers in the market for a right guard, don’t be surprised to hear his name called on day two of the NFL Draft.
