After the retirement of Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints are now back scratching their heads at the quarterback position for a new gunslinger for the future. After re-signing former first overall pick Jameis Winston to be their proposed starting quarterback in 2021. Now, however, they are linked to a quarterback prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The player, however, is not one the faithful in New Orleans should show much excitement for as Florida quarterback Kyle Trask is the prospect under the microscope. After finishing his collegiate career as a Heisman-finalist, Trask racked up the box score for the Gators. As the Saints look to replace Brees, Trask is a prospect who has caught their eye.

However, when taking a look at Trask’s tape, it becomes clear as day that he is not a top prospect in this class, far from the talent of Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, and Zach Wilson. He lacks mobility, the ability to escape the pocket, and the arm talent to push the ball to critical levels of the field. His accuracy, too, is also below that of all of the top-five quarterbacks (including Mac Jones as well).

Having a player like Kyle Pitts, often asked to extend far outside of his frame and to adjust his hips to make a catch, and a player like Kadarius Toney, who can make people miss after the catch underneath, benefited Trask greatly in 2020. Long story short, fans in New Orleans should be frightened if there is any truth to this love, especially if they are considering Trask in the first round.

Don’t believe the Saints love for Trask

There is really no point of a team picking as late as the Saints are to smokescreen, but there is some strategy to it. Picking in front of the Saints are the Chicago Bears, Washington Football Team, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the Saints picking at the 28th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the front office has little to no hope of an elite player falling into their laps.

However, if the Saints take a look at those other teams, all teams who lack a future prospect at quarterback beyond 2021, they could have a chance at tricking them into taking Trask. The draft of this? A bigger chance of a player they like in that 19-28 range falling into their laps if they can get Trask to push a said player down the board.

A statue in the pocket with below-average arm talent, Trask is not a quarterback worth taking in the first two days of the 2021 NFL Draft. So either the Saints are looking to trick a team into taking him, or they will look to land him later on in the draft. Winston (heck, even Hill) has a better shot at giving the Saints a chance at success over Trask.

We will get some comments saying: “Well look at Brees near the end of his career!” as a response in defense of drafting Trask. To that I’ll respond: how well did that go down the stretch for the Saints? Get beyond the box score with Trask, take a look at his arm strength, his ball placement, and overall athletic traits and realize he is not a starting NFL quarterback caliber prospect.
