Steelers 2021 NFL Draft primer as they run it back with Ben Roethlisberger
By Dylan Grimm
Who are some Steelers top prospects?
Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
The one prospect that I think the Steelers must get is the running back out of Alabama in Najee Harris. Harris was a four-year contributor at Bama and totaled 3,843 yards for six yards per carrying while scoring 46 total touchdowns.
While Harris was used sparingly in the passing game as a freshman and sophomore but showed the last two seasons that he is a great receiving back totaling 80 receptions for 781 yards and 11 touchdowns. Harris is a hard runner, had great vision, can pass protect and be and bell-cow back. He would be a great fit for the Steelers who traditionally love running the ball.
Alex Leatherwood, OT, Alabama
A day two target I think would be a great fit for the Steelers is another Alabama offensive player but this time it’s a versatile lineman. Alex Leatherwood was a major recruit coming out of high school and was a day one contributor for the Crimson Tide. Leatherwood has lined up at guard at Bama but mainly played left tackle protecting guys like Jalen Hurts, Tua, and Mac Jones.
Leatherwood is not a perfect prospect at left tackle by any means and can struggle with an athletic lineman who can bend and get low. If Leatherwood doesn’t pan out at left tackle he can easily kick inside and be elite there. No brainer pick if available on day two.
Tyson Campbell, CB, Georgia
If the Steelers look to address the cornerback need on day two they should take a close look at drafting Tyson Campbell out of The University of Georgia. Campbell started on the outside at UGA and was pretty good in his time there. Campbell racked up 89 tackles, one interception, and 10 pass deflections.
Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline gives his thoughts on Campbell:
"“Campbell possesses the size and underlying ball skills to start at the next level, but needs to continue to develop his game. He’s athletic and physical with the ability to line up in zone or man-off coverage. Campbell’s potential is enticing, and if properly coached, he could easily develop into a No. 2 corner on Sundays.”"
You’d love to see Campbell turn some of those deflections into more interceptions but using a lengthy frame to break up passes is his cup of tea. Campbell has room to grow as a player but the ceiling has yet to be reached with this prospect. Learning from a guy like Joe Haden would be huge for his development.
