With the official beginning of the new league year rapidly approaching, the LA Chargers will be looking to continue to build around the cornerstone superstars of their franchise.
With a heartbreaking ending to their 9-8 season, the Chargers are hungry to get back into the playoffs after barely missing it last season with an overtime loss to their AFC West rivals in the Las Vegas Raiders.
However, despite missing the playoffs, the Chargers have a bright future moving forward. Star quarterback Justin Herbert put the league on notice once again and proved his record-breaking rookie season was no fluke, establishing himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
The problem remains the same as it has been since Herbert arrived there two years ago: the Chargers have struggled to surround him with a supporting roster to return to the playoffs and have a real chance.
That’s not to say the Chargers don’t already have some playmakers on the team. Names like Derwin James, Keenan Allen, Rashawn Slater, and Joey Bosa jump off paper as stars who are being built around alongside Herbert.
Even with those top-tier players on the team, the Chargers still have some noticeable gaps at certain positions and it showed last season. The year was riddled with inconsistent performances by players in key positions, making or breaking games.
Money to Spend: Chargers 2022 Cap Space
According to OverTheCap, the Chargers enter this offseason with a whopping $57 million in estimated cap space. With that amount of cash to work with, they could certainly make a big splash with a few signings this offseason. That being said, they do have to make some big decisions in regards to their own free agents and whether they want to retain any of them.
