The San Francisco 49ers have been a team heading in the wrong direction this offseason, a trend that will have to change with the 2015 NFL Draft.

For more on the 49ers remaining needs and general draft outlook, I got together with Niner Noise‘s Doug Totten. Below are my questions followed by his answers.

  • 1. How have the team’s draft needs changed since free agency opened?

"The loss of Frank Gore and two cornerbacks hurts, but the biggest change in draft needs comes from the shocking retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland. Wide receiver is also slightly less of an immediate need with the signing of Torrey Smith."

    2. What would you say are the top three needs remaining?

    "1-cornerback 2-inside linebacker 3-wide receiver"

    3. Are there any prospects that have caught your eye so far?

"Kevin White, but the 49ers will likely go CB first round now, with Trae Waynes looking interesting."

    4. What do you think would make for a successful draft for your team?

"A successful draft would consist of shoring up the defensive backfield and picking up more possibly troubled players with fallen draft stocks, as Trent Baalke has excelled at (Aaron Lynch, for example)."

    5. So much draft focus often goes to the first few rounds, but is there something you’d like to see your team do in the later rounds?

"Baalke needs to once again look for the diamonds in the rough and players who may have had a down year or some off-field trouble. The 49ers can’t be afraid to take some risks after the offseason they’ve had."
