Green Bay Packers: Aaron Rodgers extension is already on the table
Despite having two more seasons on his current contract, Aaron Rodgers is already negotiating an extension with the Green Bay Packers.
If you follow the NFL, then you’re likely of the belief that Aaron Rodgers is one of the greatest quarterbacks in league history. The Green Bay Packers star is a Super Bowl champion, a multi-time league MVP, and one of the most skilled players to ever grace the sport.
Despite the fact that Rodgers is signed through the 2019 season, the Packers are already attempting to ensure that he plays the remainder of his career in Green Bay.
Rodgers will have a base salary of $19,800,000 for the 2018 season, but it’s all but guaranteed to reach the cap hit of $20,562,500. He’ll have a cap hit of $21.1 million for the 2019 campaign. As it presently stands, Rodgers would become an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
Packers president Mark Murphy recently told Rob Demovsky of ESPN that the organization is in discussions with Rodgers’ representative about a potential contract extension.
"“We’ve had discussions with his representative,” Murphy said at the NFL scouting combine. “I have a lot of confidence in Brian and Russ and Aaron as well. We want to create a win-win.”"
Handing Rodgers the biggest possible contract would certainly be justifiable, but the tone of Murphy’s comments implies that there may be more to it.
Rodgers, 34, certainly deserves to be the highest-paid quarterback—and for that matter, player—in NFL history. He’s not only the face of the Packers, but is one of the most statistically prolific quarterbacks of all-time.

He has the highest career passer rating (103.8) and the best career touchdown-to-interception ratio (4.01) in NFL history—and quite frankly, it isn’t even close.
Rodgers has missed at least seven games in two of the past five seasons, but the Packers appear unfazed in that regard.
The hope in Green Bay is that Rodgers re-signing will create an opportunity to build a sustainable championship contender. Green Bay has reached the NFC Championship Game in two of the past four seasons, but hasn’t been back to the Super Bowl since the 2010 campaign.
Locking Rodgers in to a long-term deal would enable it to sell the long-term future of the organization to prospective free agents.
