Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma

While Jalen Hurts is undoubtedly on everyone’s radar when it comes to the 2020 NFL Draft, he isn’t at the level of the top quarterbacks in the class. He has improved under head coach Lincoln Riley significantly this season, but there are still things that Hurts needs to work on as a prospect.

We know he has the leadership and intangibles for the quarterback position, and he’s an outstanding runner and a solid facilitator as a passer. Hurts also has a decent arm. His biggest issue right now is making sound reads outside the hashes and speeding up his mental clock to make reads on time.

Because his downfield throws don’t have the zip of other quarterbacks, his anticipation and reads need to be crisp. We saw an example of this against Baylor last Saturday. Hurts threw an interception on a throw outside the hashes that was too late and easy for the Baylor corner to make a play on.

An evident improvement in anticipation from Hurts this week would help his chances of going in the first round in April.
