2020 NFL Draft: Selecting collegiate head coaches to needy teams
By Cory Kinnan
With the third pick in the 2020 NFL Draft of Collegiate Coaches, the Atlanta Falcons select Matt Rhule, Baylor. The Falcons move on from a defensive minded coach in Dan Quinn, who has very obviously lost the Atlanta locker room, and replace him with one of the young offensive minds in college football.
To be fair to Rhule, he should already be a head coach in this league, as he was ready to put pen to paper with the New York Jets a year ago before the organization told him he could not hire his own staff. The Jets now, well, we will hear from them later.
The Baylor football program was in shambles when Rhule inherited it fresh off of the Art Briles era that was littered with recruiting scandals and far worse accusations. The turnaround Rhule has led in Waco, Texas is nothing short of miraculous as just three years later, he has the Bears back in the Big-12 title game.
Inheriting Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, a talented offensive line, and a great defense, Rhule will look to get the wheels back on the wagon in Atlanta sooner rather than later. The veteran leaders and cornerstones of the Falcons are aging though, so Rhule has to act fast or face the reality of leading the franchise through a rebuild.
